blestbethefinishedTOP

Blest be the ties that bind!
The quilt top is done as far as the twenty blocks that will cover just the bed top. 23 inches of borders will be added next.
All in all I believe the colors and patterns of the ties work together to blend a nice top.
I hope each tie brings back a special memory for my Cousin Shela.
Three borders will be added to the sides. One small 4 inch, one large 14 inch with tie block corner pieces and then another small 4 inch border for the bottom. The 14 inch border will have Louis' favorite scripture verse embroidered on it.
Then off to the longarm shop in Maidens, VA.

blestbethefinishedBLOCKS

Woo-hoo, the blocks are finished. Now we are deciding on the line-up. Looking at the blocks a few days helps to get a feel for the patterns and over all look of the quilt.
Shams are on the table. One purple theme and the other red and black. We only had one red block and I could not place it in the quilt top without it sticking out and drawing your eye to it first. We want the top blocks and scripture that will be embroidered on the sides to blend.
There is light at the end of the tunnel!

tiethatBINDS

A short update on the tie quilt.
First of all the quilt is cut from ties that belonged to Brother Louis of Baton Rouge, LA. As most of you know, Louis went to heaven about 1 year ago. Shela, his wife wanted a nice quilt made of Louis' ties to remember him by. Imagine, she is trusting ME to do this. The Cross and Crown pattern seemed fitting for the job. After cutting ties, ironing ties, backing ties and sometimes dreaming about ties, we are ready to get this quilt together. I say we because my quilting friends are helping me out. They each took a stack of ties to open up and every Friday somebody helps open, press or trim quilt pieces. thank goodness for good friends!
The pieces are cut, stacked, dog ears trimmed and the first sewing of the crown started on Friday. Piece one and two are the half square triangles on each side of the crown point.
(That is the clothesline looking picture. ) Chain stitching pieces saves a lot of time. Once the pieces are opened and pressed, part three begins with attaching the half square triangle/solid square to the large piece of the crown. I pinned, sewed and pressed for about 3 1/2 hours last night and hardly made a dent in the stack.
Don't worry Shela, I will finish this!

FRIDAY

Cross and Crown quilt pieces. Just a sampling of half square triangles for the quilt.

Thanks to my friends for cutting the sewn squares in half and pressing.
This saved me a LOT of time. The quilt pattern is not a hard one, but with 37 fabric pieces per block it is time consuming.
Lucy is helping lay out Cindy's next quilt, an old pattern inherited from Aunt Joyce, Gordon's Aunt.
Snooks turned one so Cindy is making a quilt with blocks signed by friends and family.
